Our Lady’s Hospice & Care Services is Ireland’s largest hospice with a catchment area of over 1 million across South Dublin and Wicklow. It has three sites – Harold’s Cross, Blackrock and Wicklow. With over 600 staff and 330 volunteers, it provides specialist care for people with a wide range of needs from rehabilitation to end of life care.
The organisation is undertaking the most ambitious multi-phase project in it's history: the redevelopment of the palliative care unit in Harold’s Cross, the refurbishment of the palliative care unit in Blackrock, the opening of a new hospice in Wicklow (in 2020) and the transformation and expansion of our community-based care services to meet growing demand and anticipated future needs.
2018 saw the completion of the first phase of this project. The state-of-the-art Specialist Palliative Care Unit opened in Harold’s Cross. Comprising 36 single, palliative care rooms it allows for privacy, dignity, comfort and professional excellence at end of life. This important redevelopment is transforming the quality of life for their patients and families.
The total cost of the new Unit was €14.6m, and 100% of the building costs (€13.6m) came from funds donated by donors and companies. This redevelopment is the first step in their journey to consistently enhance and develop their person-centred care across all three sites.
Unfortunately there has been a decrease in state funding, so support from individuals and business communities is absolutely vital to the work that the hospice does.
