To provide context on the charity, please let me introduce you to an incredible story and person. My father, Robert Beinborn, passed away on June 20, 2011 as the result of a car accident. It was a sudden end to a long and painful struggle. My dad was diagnosed with testicular cancer in 1986, at the age of 34. He successfully underwent treatment and had the cancer in remission. For nearly two years following treatment, the cancer was undetectable.
Then, in 1988, a tumor was located around my father’s aorta, the largest blood vessel near the heart. Surgery took place on May 1, 1988 and severe complications ensued. My dad was in surgery for 13 hours and major arteries ruptured. After several hours, the muscle and tissue in the lower half of his body died. Doctors amputated his left leg at the knee; but the remaining tissue and muscles were damaged beyond repair. Dad underwent nearly 40 surgeries and spent a year in hospitals and in rehabilitation centers. However, the damage was severe and would leave my father in a wheelchair, unable to walk again.
Before his passing in 2011, my dad coached the junior varsity boys’ and junior varsity girls’ basketball teams at Cuba City High School. He also coached softball at the high school and served as the Executive Assistant to the Wisconsin Basketball Coaches’ Association (WBCA). He was elected to his second term as Mayor of Cuba City in 2010 and spent his summers as one of the coordinators of the Tri-State Basketball camps. And he did it all from a wheelchair while battling constant pain over the years.
You couldn’t go anywhere in southwest Wisconsin where they didn’t know Bob Beinborn and the work he did with kids. He was more than their coach: He was a friend and mentor. In 1998, USA Today recognized him as its Volunteer of the Year in Wisconsin. The University of Notre Dame Dubuque (IA) Chapter named him the Man of the Year in 2001 for his work, his courage and his perseverance. The WBCA honored him by inducting him into the Wisconsin Basketball Hall of Fame in 2006 as a Friend of Basketball for the countless hours of work he’s done helping kids in communities. And in 2006, the city of Cuba City voted him mayor, a testament to the respect he’s earned from parents and peers alike over the years.
My dad is a symbol of undying perseverance. Instead of folding with the cards he was dealt, he took a new direction in life. He dedicated his life to making the lives of those around him better. If you walked into the Cuba City high school gymnasium on game night, there were people ages 3 to 80 that stopped to talk to ‘Rabbi’ as he was nicknamed. They all wanted those few seconds of seeing him laugh and smile with them. They wanted those few moments of feeling good about life. That’s what my dad did for those around him. He was the ultimate giver.
My dad turned 59 in February 2011. When he turned 40, most were surprised. When he turned 50, those who knew him were shocked. He almost ended up making 60 and it took a car accident, not the cancer or pain, to take him from us. It was through sheer determination and a passion for helping kids that this is possible. He overcame daily pain most cannot fathom. But did so to give what he could of himself.
We're holding our annual golf outing in my dad's honor on August 4th, 2017 at University Ridge in Madison, WI. We will include flight and raffle prizes along with a silent auction. We will include a band for everyone to enjoy after the event is completed. And we’re doing it all to raise money for the Memorial, to give back to the students and children in Southwest Wisconsin, and to the Jimmy V Fund to help fund continued cancer research. We still have room for some teams if people have interest in playing one of the nicest Division 1 courses in college golf (#4 in 2016)!
Thank you for your time and consideration of a donation.
