KEEP A CHILD ALIVE

Co-founded by Alicia Keys, Keep a Child Alive (KCA) is a non-profit organization that has been on the forefront of the global AIDS crisis for the last 17 years and is dedicated to working towards an AIDS-free generation by combating the physical, social and economic impacts of HIV and AIDS. KCA collaborates closely with local partners in some of the countries hardest hit by the HIV epidemic - Kenya, Rwanda, Uganda, South Africa, and India to address the most pressing challenges and constraints faced by vulnerable children, young people and their families affected by HIV and AIDS. KCA partners provide comprehensive HIV care and treatment, counselling and testing, access to antiretroviral (ARVs), and psychosocial services; and use the power of sports and life skills development to empower young people to become champions to address HIV amongst their peers. In 2019, KCA reached 150,000 children, adolescents and adults affected by HIV and AIDS.

Global and local communities have rallied to increase access to HIV treatment over the past decade; there has been a remarkable success, but we still have a long way to go. Right now, with new international guidelines that recommend starting HIV treatment earlier than previous guidelines, it is estimated that only 34% of adults who need HIV treatment are receiving it. Among children, access to HIV treatment remains shockingly low – 7 out of 10 children living with HIV who need treatment to stay alive are still NOT getting it. This is unacceptable. We are committed to continuing the fight to uphold the human right to health care by expanding access to compassionate, dignified HIV treatment and support for children and families and sharing successful models widely.
