Chalti Firti (Mobile) Bansa Library – simple yet powerful concept that has taken hold and fuels the curiosity of every child, youth, adult and senior within the 100 mile radius of Bansa in Uttar Pradesh, India.
At the heart of the Chalti Phirti Bansa Library is a belief that learning should travel to where people are, not the other way around. Barriers of distance, gender, mobility, and social expectations keep many potential learners away from opportunities, skills, learning with a purpose, joy and power of reading.
The Chalti Phirti Bansa Library is not just a vehicle (an e-Rickshaw) with books. It is a moving library, a vehicle with resources and learning opportunities, a travelling story circle, a mobile spark of imagination, designed to reach those who cannot reach preexisting brick and mortar community libraries. Whether it’s a child whose parents won’t allow her to go too far from home, a grandmother who wants to listen to folk tales again, or a young boy preparing for his dream job, but with no resources to help him achieve this goal, this library-on-wheels meets them where they are.
The operation of these libraries is designed to be locally managed by the community members, with remote support provided by volunteers and patrons. Through its activities, the Bansa Community Library seeks to imbibe a feeling of empowerment, strength and awareness among the children and the adults through the books. The library requests support to build a sustainable library program that expands access to books and promotes thinking through reading, and accepts donations of Hindi, Urdu, and English books, covering both fiction and non-fiction genres. In recognition of Jatin’s relentless pursuit of progress, compassion and innovation he was awarded by ALFA Awards and Idobro as the Education Changemaker of 2025.
