When asked ‘what’s one thing that’s not on my LinkedIn profile’, I usually respond with the story of the time I got caught in a rip within first 3 months of arriving in Australia. It’s a funny story but it did not feel fun in the least bit when it happened. It was by a sheer stroke of luck that I was getting a surfing lesson as part of an offsite activity and I had a surfboard tethered to my leg which I could hang on to. In about 20 mins (probably was more like 2 minutes) the instructor noticed me floating out in the ocean, by myself, half sunk and struggling to get back on the board.
Why did this happen? Because I did not know how to swim. Why did I even think it was a good idea to take a surfing lesson without knowing how to swim? Two reasons,
- I was plain stupid – sorry, could not find business friendly language to explain my decision making in that moment
- Because I did not grow up around oceans or learnt how to swim as a child, didn’t invest into learning this critical life skill
I was afraid of getting into water for a very long time after that incident. But last year, I decided to face my fear and signed up for swimming lessons. And this April, I’m preparing to go back into the ocean for a 2.5KM swim, in support of the Can Too Foundation.
1 in 3 women and 1 in 2 men will be diagnosed with cancer in their lifetime. This means that potentially someone we love may have to battle cancer, and that's a statistic that needs to change. So, I am raising valuable funds that go towards innovation in the prevention, care, and control of cancer. Since 2005, Can Too Foundation has trained over 22,000 participants and raised over $30,000,000 to invest in over 150 cancer research grants.
If you've read this far, thank you for sticking with my story. And thank you for your donations - it will give me hope and motivation over the 10 weeks of training.
