Myanmar & Thailand Earthquake
About this Giving Opportunity
Relief efforts continue in Southeast Asia after a powerful 7.7 magnitude earthquake struck central Myanmar and Thailand on March 28th. The quake caused widespread damage to homes, collapsed buildings and infrastructure, and left thousands displaced, injured, or missing. The death toll continues to rise. The epicentre was about 17 kilometres from Mandalay, Myanmar's second-largest city, but the impact was felt throughout the region, affecting both Thailand and Myanmar. Non-profit partners are addressing infrastructure damage and communication blackouts. With temperatures rising and the monsoon season approaching in just weeks, there is an urgent need to stabilize affected communities before secondary crises emerge. Please consider donating to one of the following organizations providing on the ground support:
International Federation of Red Cross (IFRC) mobilized its network to provide essential support, enabling emergency funds and international assistance to empower the Myanmar Red Cross Society (MRCS) and the Thai Red Cross Society (TRCS) in expanding its life-saving operations. The field organisations administer first aid, distribute emergency relief items such as blankets, tarpaulins, and hygiene kits, and deploy mobile health teams to the most affected communities.
Doctors Without Borders/Médecins Sans Frontières (MSF) operates in both Thailand and Myanmar. The MSF emergency response team has deployed assessment teams, emergency trauma care teams, provided life and limb-saving surgical care for those injured. MSF focuses on safe drinking water while providing general healthcare.
GlobalGiving launched a relief fund to provide urgent relief and long-term assistance in the hardest-hit communities. While communication lines remain down and impacts are still being assessed, GlobalGiving anticipates support to community-based partners in both Thailand and Myanmar with long histories of support to communities, even in these challenging circumstances, including Mutual Aid Myanmar, Asia Pacific Refugee Rights Network (APRRN), and Health and Hope.
